In the past, Jessica has been an editor for Vox, The Daily Dot, and Rolling Stone. She is currently an editor for NBC News. Born and raised in Hawaii, her work has been published in the Washington Post, BuzzFeed, Vice, and Elle.
This book, according to Good Reads, is “a powerful, lush memoir about a Hawaiian woman who ran away from paradise to discover who she is and where she belongs.”
Machado takes you through her journey of moving away from her home in Hawaii in search of independence.
She moves to Los Angeles, convinced she can define herself by leaving behind her complicated family and escaping her mother’s ill health and uses a reckless downward spiral to escape her isolation, as her dying mother ends up following her.
Attending Machado’s reading is an opportunity to learn more about Hawaii’s history and traditions. By hearing stories from a local perspective, readers can gain a deeper understanding of the culture that makes Hawaii so unique.
