MIREYA’S JAN HIGHLIGHT: Chinese New Years in Honolulu

This past January, I had the opportunity to visit Chinatown and enjoy the vivid traditions and activities of Chinese New Year in Honolulu. It was an incredible festival, full of culture, color, and energy.

The celebration is significantly established in Chinese customs, representing revival, prosperity, and the arrival of good fortune for the following year. The streets of Chinatown were filled with traditional lion and dragon dances, fireworks, and live performers, creating an exciting scene. Vendors lined the streets, selling tasty Chinese cuisine, and other food while local businesses also showed off their business.

I attended the celebration with my friend Darla, and we were both amazed by the energy and beauty of it all. Since I’m currently taking Mandarin classes, this experience gave me a deeper appreciation for the culture. My teacher often shares insights about the significance of Chinese New Year, explaining how it is a time for family reunions, honoring ancestors, and embracing traditions that bring luck and happiness. Seeing these customs in action outside of the classroom made them feel even more meaningful.

During the festival, I purchased a handwritten note featuring Chinese characters that spelled out my Chinese name, along with a message that read, “May all your wishes come true.” I also picked up small traditional items believed to bring luck and joy into one’s life.

Overall, Honolulu’s Chinese New Year celebrations provide an excellent chance for both locals and visitors to learn about the rich cultural legacy of Hawaii’s Chinese community. Until next post! – MH
