BY EMILY HARRISON / KALAMALAMA STAFF WRITER
Now as some of you may know, I am a writer at heart, and slightly by profession.
And I do believe in the old saying, “actions speak louder than words.”
Of course they do.
But what most fail to realize, is that words leave a bigger impact. Words, are a foundation of which a society is built. Words transform the world into something worthwhile.
Whether you be a poet, a writer, a songbird, a novelist… Words, have and are their own actions. Words are illecebrous; caliginous; sapient.
Let Me Introduce You
What exactly is the English International Honor Society? Well, let me tell you!
This is more commonly referred to as Sigma Tau Delta, something someone clearly didn’t think hard enough about when naming it.
But it exists to recognize outstanding scholars in English literature, rhetoric, and of course, writing.
They aspire to help provide further interest and further education in both literature and the English language.
Now, Sigma Tau Delta was established in 1924. Their goal is to create a strong relationship between literacy and the discipline of the English language.
They are the second largest member of the Association of College Honor Societies.
Now, there are many chapters of Sigma Tau Delta across the world, but we have a chapter right here at HPU.
This chapter is relatively small, but we are growing!
Our current president, Venus Mairena is trying so hard to grow this chapter and expand the news of it as well.
A few ideas Venus has, especially considering this is the centennial of Sigma Tau Delta, is to host a fundraising event or a community event relative to the 100 year mark.
We are still working on what exactly that will entail but were going to make it happen.
There are new officers for this chapter, and they are to be announced soon!
Keep your eyes out in case you may know one or two!
Of course, to be part of such a society, there are some requirements. To be a candidate for this program, you must have a minimum of a “B” average in English. And you must rank at least in the top 35% of your class. And of course, completed three semesters of college course work.
Reaping The Benefits
Now there’s plenty that being a member can do for you. When you’re in school, there are several, and I mean lots, of scholarships that you can qualify for. There are grants as well.
This isn’t just a college thing; you are a lifetime member. You may not have access to their scholarships once you graduate, but there are plenty of other benefits that you can take advantage of.
Depending on where you are, and what chapters are near you, there are plenty of local events and services you can participate in and enjoy. There are publication opportunities, internship opportunities, a job board for members, and of course a strong international network.
My brain can barely comprehend all of that.
You have access to PUBLICATION opportunities, even if you’ve graduated. This isn’t just books, it can be poems, scripts, screen plays, what have you.
There are internship opportunities. Want to work for a big publication or literary based company? Get your foot in the door.
Not to mention the INTERNATIONAL networking. If you’re from a small town like me, that promise is a little unfathomable. This coming summer and academic year, the new officer of this chapter will be trying their best to host fundraising events.
It would be immensely helpful for our chapter if the community were to get involved and help support us.
Support, If You Please
Even if you are not part of the Honolulu community, there are plenty of other chapters across the world that could use your support.
You may not be able to be a member, but that shouldn’t stop you from being able to enjoy being part of the chapter’s family.
Are you a company, a family, a small foundation? We’ll gladly accept anyone who would be willing to donate or even just hear our cause.
I am a new member, and this net year in my life I will be trying my best to make the most of this chapter. But any help we can get, will be much appreciated.
