When I first started to think about which college to attend, Hawaii Pacific University stood out to me because of its diversity.
And when I arrived on Oahu, I fell even more in love with everyone’s differences. As I enjoyed the cultural diversity, I also wondered what type of music everyone listened to. Would everyone in Hawaii have really different tastes in music based on the places they’ve been and the things they have seen?
HPU students are constantly listening to music between classes, whether it be on a shuttle, walking to Waterfront Plaza, or hanging out at Aloha Tower Marketplace. I am obsessed with finding out what kind of music HPU students enjoy, so I decided to ask a few people on campus.
Ciara Joshua and Marissa Anderson are both freshmen at HPU, while Andrea Guerrero is a sophomore. Joshua is studying biology, while Anderson is a nursing major and Guerrero is in the communications program at HPU.
We asked the three about their current musical tastes:
What song are you listening to right now?
- Ciara: “Pick Up Your Feelings” by Jazmine Sullivan
- Marissa: “Breezeblocks” by Alt-J
- Andrea: “Pink Dolphin Sunset” by Tory Lanez
When asked what music platform they use most, all three said they use Spotify. Every year, Spotify creates a “Wrapped” feature for all its users, displaying the artists, songs, and genres they most listened to throughout the year.
Who were your top artists of 2022 on Spotify?
- Ciara: Millia, BENEE, Melanie Martinez, Ariana Grande, GOT7
- Marissa: Arctic Monkeys, Nessa Barret, Morgan Wallen, Luke Bryans, Pink Floyd
- Andrea: Bad Bunny, SZA, The Weeknd, J. Cole, N/A
Clearly all three had incredibly diverse music tastes, with none of them having any artists in common.
Even in just speaking to them, I could tell all three of them were very different people. I loved how they all got along, and laughed amongst each other, and even asked each other, “Who else do I listen to?”
If you were trapped on a desert island, and can only listen to two artists for the rest if your life, who are you choosing?
