Zorah Burress: Getting to know me

BY ZORAH BURRESS / Kalamalama Staff

Hello everyone. My name is Zorah Burress and I’m a second-year student at Hawaii Pacific University. I’m originally from upstate New York and I am writing for Kalamalama this semester.

WHY I DECIDED TO COME TO HPU
I’ve always loved to travel, so when I got the opportunity to go to Hawaii Pacific University, I was more than excited to move across the world. I’ve had the most amazing experiences and have met lifelong friends. Aside from being able to explore a new city, HPU also offers so many great opportunities that you can’t find anywhere else. Not only can you take classes in a variety of fields, but there are also plenty of clubs and organizations you can join. Overall, going to HPU has been an amazing experience for me and I’m happy that I decided to make this journey.

WHAT I LIKE TO DO IN MY FREE TIME
When I’m not at school I’m either working as a server or hanging out with my friends. We like to go on hikes, go to the beach, and have game nights. It’s fun to get out of our comfort zone and try new things.

MY MAJOR, AND WHY I CHOSE IT
My major is communication. I started in nursing and quickly figured out it was not for me. Communication fits me well because it’s a broad major and I can do a lot with it. It requires creativity, problem-solving, writing, and speaking which are all skills I have developed through my experiences so far. With the skills from this degree, I am sure that I will be able to make an impact on the world around me.

AFTER COLLEGE
I don’t have any set plans for after I graduate. I would like to travel and possibly join the peace corps. I love exploring new places and working with the younger generations, so no matter what I choose, I’m excited to see what lies ahead in my future!
